Phenylalanine

Phenylalanine is the third most abundant essential amino acid in the horse’s diet.  It is abundant in many of the feedstuffs and forages fed to horses.

It is the precursor of the amino acid tyrosine and is associated with the production of dopamine, norepinephrine and epinephrine (adrenaline).  The thyroid needs it for normal function and all these substances affect blood pressure, heart rate, multiple functions of the brain, fat metabolism and blood sugar.
